The Trial of Wushu ep 1

Hello and welcome to The Trials. Our new system play test Actual Play podcasts from The Rpg Academy. These games are from one-shots of us playing a new system and giving it a trial run.  This is the Trial  of WUSHU by Danile Bayn.  Wushu is an action movie inspired RPG with loose mechanics designed to inspire scenes out of any Van Damme or Stallone movie.

Our GM for this Trial is Andrew ‘That One GM’  @ThatOneGm who did an amazing job.  I can easily say this is one of my favorite series of show’s we’ve ever done!

This first episode is mostly a rules review and overview and we set up the parameters of the game we’d be playing.

For players –

I am playing Van Darn a TimeCop not unlike, but not copyright infringement  of Van Damme (@theRpgAcademy)

Caleb is playing Larry Smeshen a Private Eye Wizard from Chicago (@TheCalebG)

Matthew is playing Red VI a dinosaur who wears a genetically modified sentient Trench coat  ( @MattParody )

And making his triumphant return to the show is Scott playing a swarm of sentient squirrels that make up the form of an alternate history Annie Oakley.  (@Pachetra)

  1. That was glorious and absurd. Primarily absurd. I like the pretty free form flow of the game and the simplicity of setting it up. I think it might be a little bit trickier for new players to get into who aren’t as prepared to just role play off the top of their heads, but for experienced players they can play whatever type of game they want and make it work.

    1. We cover that a bit when we do our recap. It was a ton of fun but i’m not sure an inexperienced GM could handle it or inexperienced players fully utilize it. But it was one of my most fun games ever that I can recall. And it gets better.

Love the idea of having no set adventure in mind and just playing it by ear.

    1. It can go terribly wrong, but in this case it went great!

    2. If you play it by ear, I suggest narrowing down the genre a bit more than we did in these episodes. It’s much easier to fill in blank spaces on the fly if you have specific tropes and archetypes to pull from. My favorite thing is to pick two genres instead of just one. (e.g., fantasy noir, cyberpunk kaiju, or space opera western)
